Promising Therapeutic Approach for SARS‐CoV‐2 Infections by Using a Rutin‐Based Combination Therapy

Abstract: The development of new therapeutic approaches for SARS‐CoV‐2 infections is of particular current importance. The combination therapy proposed here is based on already proven, safe and inexpensive compounds. The natural compound rutin, one of the six therapy components, has the potential to inhibit both viral and host cell targets. In addition, this therapy involves the use of acetylsalicylic acid, vitamin C and vitamin D3, which should be administered together with calcium and magnesium. The importance of each… Show more

“…Furthermore, this pathological process is accompanied by discernible alterations in both non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant defense mechanisms ( Sebastiano et al., 2016 ). Rutin has garnered increasing attention in recent years due to its diverse biological effects, encompassing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer properties ( Perk et al., 2014 ; Budzynska et al., 2019 ; Khan et al., 2020 ; Mazik, 2022 ). Moreover, Rutin has demonstrated broad-spectrum antiviral activity against several viral pathogens, including influenza virus, hepatitis C virus, norovirus, enterovirus A71, and even the notorious SARS-CoV-2 ( Lin et al., 2012 ; Chéron et al., 2015 ; Zakaryan et al., 2017 ; Ling et al., 2020 ; Mazik, 2022 ).…”

Our investigation extends this repertoire by showcasing the inhibitory effects of Rutin on EqHV-8 infection.…”

“…Moreover, rutin has been identified as a potential inhibitor of SARS‐CoV‐2‐bound PLpro (Al‐Zahrani, 2020). So, according to an in silico study, RUT has potent antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties that may be advantageous in the treatment of COVID‐19 (Mazik, 2022). In conjunction with its high solubility and low lipophilicity, RUT showed promise as a drug targeting COVID‐19 (Rashidian, Mahboub, et al, 2022; Rashidian, Shahin, et al, 2022).…”

“…An example of this is 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (Figure 1a), which is said to have anti-cancer properties [9]. This phenylacetic acid derivative is a metabolite of the neurotransmitter dopamine [6], but has also been identified as a metabolite of other compounds such as rutin [8], a flavonoid with a very broad pharmacological spectrum of activity [10,11].…”
