Promoting Potato Seed Sprouting Using an Amphiphilic Nanocomposite

Abstract: Most potato tubers were used as seeds and sprouted relatively slowly in soil, greatly influencing potato production. To solve this problem, an amphiphilic nanocomposite was fabricated by loading hydrophobic silica (H-SiO) in hydrophilic attapulgite nest-like and used as a nano presprouting agent (NPA). This technology could conveniently adjust the occupation area ratio of water and air (OARWA) on the potato surface. NPA could endow potatoes with an appropriate OARWA and, thus, effectively accelerate sprouting.… Show more

“…The fabrication procedure and mechanism are shown in Figure . ATP possessed a unique fibrous morphology, a large specific surface area, and thus could be used as an ideal carrier for Gly. ATP–Gly was loaded in CA to form porous ATP–Gly–CA hydrogel spheres (actually EDRMG) via a cross-linking reaction. Under an electric field, the pores in EDRMG hydrogel spheres could be effectively enlarged because of the Coulomb force of the anionic CA polymer, promoting the release of Gly.…”

“…5−8 ATP contains abundant surface −OH groups and thus has good capacity for water retention and absorption. 9 ATP can also be modified by other nanomaterials to form more stable nest-like structures and used as controlled-release nanoparticles. 5 These characteristics make ATP an ideal candidate as a basic seed coating reagent, which could be beneficial for water absorption and retention.…”

“…The germination activity is basically determined by the water absorption and respiratory intensity, which is related to the occupation area ratio of water and air (OARWA) on the seed surface. 9 To increase the coating efficiency and OARWA, ATP can be modified to obtain an amphiphilic nanomaterial, as previously described. Calcium peroxide, which is a conventional oxygen-providing compound, is widely used for heavy metal fixation and the decomposition and absorption of organic contaminants due to the production of hyperoxide.…”

“…Annually, 1–2.5 million tons of pesticides are applied, of which only 10% stay on the crops, and a significant amount is lost due to drift, which results in repeated pesticide spraying. Eventually causing nontarget accumulation leading to soil and groundwater pollution. , Engineered nanomaterials have shown huge potential in the agriculture sector by enhancing crop production, increasing pesticides efficiency, , and reducing environmental damage . In the conventional successful formulation like Bordeaux mixture, Cu plays an important role in crop disease control either as hydroxide, sulfate, or chloride salt. , The application of Cu salts cause the Cu accumulation in the field and leaching into freshwater bodies .…”
