Promoting spatial cognition in hospital buildings using space syntax analyses

Abstract: Spatial cognition is a pivotal consideration in hospital buildings. Potential circulation configuration alternatives in hospitals have been filtered to 59 significant alternatives, to be simulated using space syntax analyses for measuring connectivity, visual integration, and visual step depth. Best alternatives have been determined via comparison and correlation analysis. A survey has been conducted, comparing the preferences of professional architects with simulation outcomes. Results show that best and wors… Show more

“…The mentioned literature highlights the importance of customer spatial cognition as a determinant of costumer experience, which has a pivotal role to play (Iorio and Spagnoli, 2023;Ahmed and Mujeeb, 2017;Forte, 2019); Recognition of location, distance, connections and patterns are examples of cognition attributes (Hajibabai et al, 2006), which ultimately allows users to easily navigate their way in various environments (Youssef and Youssef, 2022) and in a timely manner (Dalton et al, 2019). Other design-depending aspects also influence costumers' experiences, such as crowding, comfort and safety (Ayyoub, 2020;Khare, 2014;Robinson, 2019).…”

“…Hence, enhancing costumer experience through factors that influence spatial cognition and navigability should be addressed strongly for the optimization of RF and are a candidate to enhancing the experience-based learning approaches (Iorio and Spagnoli, 2023;Jones et al, 2021;Woods et al, 2022). It is worth noting that the utilization of space syntax techniques is highly suitable for this task (Yamu et al, 2021;Youssef and Youssef, 2022), yet little research has used this approach to study the specifics of RF design, rather most space syntax based studied investigated larger retail scales such malls, shopping venues and commercial districts (Andi et al, 2023;Deb and Mitra, 2020).…”

“…Especially, the spatial measures of the integration or segregation of a particular space in a building are focused on as predictors of how busy or quiet the space is likely to be (Hanson, 1984). This aspect is employed, for example, to predict the circulation efficiency and flow patterns (Anselm, 2022) and spatial cognition (Youssef and Youssef, 2022) in a facility design.…”
