Proof of concept of an RFID-enabled supply chain in a B2B e-commerce environment

Abstract: Based on a field study conducted in the utility industry, this paper examines the impacts and potential benefits generated by an RFID application in one specific supply chain. Through a detailed investigation of the underlying business processes, we demonstrate how process optimization can be achieved when integrating RFID technology into information systems applications. A proof of concept (POC) is also conducted in laboratory settings to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scenarios.

“…Moreover, the RFID tags were able to function after being stored outdoors and exposed to the elements over five nights. These results provide strong support to previous studies on RFID technology [11,12] and highlight the fact that RFID technology is mostly product driven, and therefore, the best performance of the system heavily depends on the type of product, the context of implementation, the level of tagging, etc.…”

“…Most early studies on the feasibility of RFID technology have mostly been conducted using this approach or pilots projects (e.g. [11][12][13]). A proof of concept is used to illustrate whether a proposed system or application is likely to operate or function as expected [14].…”

“…This is a lengthy and error prone process; as a result it's done less frequently and hence often is not up-todate. The capabilities of the barcode technology are limited in term of functionalities that businesses require (Bendavid et al, 2006). RFID technology offers a solution to the above mentioned problem.…”

“…It is generally accepted that UHF RFID systems can revolutionize various commercial applications such as supply chain management [2,3]. Several major supply chain companies such as Wal-Mart and Tesco plan to mandate the use of UHF RFID system in their supply chains, which operates in the 860-960 MHz band [4].…”
