Prooxidant potential of CeO2 nanoparticles towards hydrogen peroxide

Abstract: The multifaceted enzyme-like activity of CeO 2 nanoparticles (CeNPs) expands the prospects for their potential biomedical applications. In this regard, there is a need for a comprehensive analysis of the redox behavior of CeO 2 nanoparticles in relation to key molecules of free radical homeostasis. Here, the prooxidant potential of CeNPs towards H 2 O 2 was investigated to elucidate both prooxidant capacity and prooxidant activity of CeNPs. To describe the kinetics in the luminol-H 2 O 2 system at pH 8.5 upon … Show more

“…Such an ultra-small size makes it possible to ensure high efficiency of endocytosis into various cell types, including hMScs, and can also minimize the risk of an immune response of the body upon their direct injection into the bloodstream. In PBS, the aggregation of the NPs is more pronounced, and is connected to the strong chemisorption of phosphates on the surface of Gd-doped ceria, which affects the bioactivity of NPs [ 41 , 42 ].…”

“…The ROS generating system contained hydrogen peroxide and luminol was used as a chemiluminescent probe. The technique of chemiluminescence analysis is described in detail in [28]. The required amounts of luminol (50 µM) and H 2 O 2 (980 µM) were added to cuvettes with phosphate buffer solution (100 mM, pH 7.4), the total volume of the system was 1.000 ml.…”

“…The kinetic parameters of the luminol oxidation reactions with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of CeO 2 were mathematically modelled (Figure 7b). At the first stage, the interaction of cerium dioxide with H 2 O 2 with the formation of hydroxyl radicals was considered [67]. The chosen kinetic model of H 2 O 2 -induced luminol oxidation includes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (2), the interaction of luminol with hydroxyl radicals (3), and the final stage of chemiluminescence (4), where P is the reaction product:…”
