Abstract:Brain functions are highly dependent on a fine regulation of cerebral blood flow by a mechanism known as neurovascular coupling. This mechanism is mediated by astrocytes, which are located between neurons and parenchymal arterioles. Neurotransmitters released during an increase in synaptic activity activate receptors located on astrocytes, which initiates Ca2+ waves that are propagated to the astrocytic endfeet and neighboring astrocytes through gap junctions and activation of a purinergic signaling by ATP rel… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
