Propagation Characteristics of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Induced Fractures under True Tri-Axial Stresses

Abstract: Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) fracturing is a non-aqueous fracturing technology, which has attracted considerable attention on exploiting shale gas. In this study, shale specimens and artificial sandstone specimens were used to conduct SC-CO2 fracturing and water fracturing experiments to investigate the characteristics of SC-CO2 induced fractures. An acoustic emission (AE) monitoring device was employed to monitor the AE energy release rate during the experiment. The experiment results indicate that t… Show more

“…Jia [108] and Zhao [109] studied the crack propagation behavior of supercritical CO 2 fracturing of shale and scanned the fracture section after fracturing by using laser three-dimensional scanning. Zou [110] and Hu [111] obtained fracture characteristics and parameters through artificial optical observation and fracture images.…”

“…To investigate the effect of fracturing fluid type on the breakdown pressure of shale, the breakdown pressures of Zhang et al (2017), Deng et al (2018), He et al (2018), Zhao et al (2018), Zhou et al (2018), Chen et al (2019Chen et al ( , 2021a, Hu et al (2019), Ranjith et al (2019) and Jia et al (2020), using different fracturing fluids to fracture shale were summarized, as shown in Fig. 4.…”

“…Additionally, Li et al (2016) indicate that a positive relation may exist between the minimum principal stress and the formation breakdown pressure. The fracturing experiments (using water and SC-CO 2 ) performed by Zhang et al (2017), He et al (2020), Zhao et al (2018), and Hu et al (2019) suggest that the fracturing process is influenced not only by fluids but also by the bedding planes, pre-existing natural fractures, in situ stresses, etc.…”

“…have been employed in previous studies to characterize fracture properties (such as the morphology, complexity, roughness, etc. ), ,, these tools either lack measurement accuracy or cannot be applied on an entire core plug or sample . To achieve a full-sample quantitative analysis of fracturing, we propose a more accurate and nondestructive method to investigate the fracture morphology.…”
