Propagation of shock waves from source to receiver

Abstract: This paper describes a 3-stage technique to model the propagation to the far field of nonlinear shock waves produced by high-energy explosive sources. The stages are: (1) a 3-dimensional unsteady Euler method for the strong shock near the source, including a Flux-Corrected-Transport (FCT) method, (2) the Nonlinear Progressive-wave Equation (NPE) procedure for the degeneration of the shock into a linear acoustical wave, and (3) the Parabolic Equation (PE) method for propagation to the far field. Comparisons of … Show more

“…Next, NPE models can propagate weakly nonlinear waves over moderate distances and finally, when the wave amplitude is low enough, (linear) frequency-domain method like the PE can be used. This hybrid method allows to propagate waves from explosions over distances up to several kilometres [14].…”

“…The non-linear parabolic equation (NPE) has first been developed by McDonald and Kuperman in 1987 [28] (see also [27,6]) and has been successfully used for underwater acoustics simulations 9 [1,7] and blast wave propagation in air [40,2,21]. The NPE model for a 2D domain with Cartesian coordinates (x, z) filed with air is:…”

“…15 Unless airplanes are taxiing, aircraft noise is much harder to reduce by means of barriers. 16 Aviation noise generally contains a high intensity of low frequency noise as well, which is less well absorbed in the atmosphere, and travels over much greater distances due to long wavelengths of the sound. 17,18 During the past decades a great number of studies have presented and tested strategies to reduce (traffic) noise.…”
