Propagation Route and Speed of Swell in the Indian Ocean

Abstract: The characteristics of swell propagation play an important role in the forecasting of ocean waves as well as on research on global climate change, wave energy development, and disaster prevention and reduction. To reveal the propagation routes, terminal targets and speeds of swells that originate from the southern Indian Ocean westerly (SIOW), an intraseasonal swell index (SI) was defined based on the 45 year (September 1957 to August 2002) ERA‐40 wave reanalysis data product from the European Center for Mediu… Show more

“…Note that more swells are coming from southwest, and these swells have a longer wavelength (350 m approximately) than those from southeast (around 300 m) statistically. Both of these features indicate that Southern swells have more influence on the Bay of Bengal than the Arabian Sea, in line with previous finding from modeling [21] [22].…”

“…During JJA, the AS is dominated by mixed sea state i. e, a combination of strong monsoon winds forced wind sea and swell 22 , 29 and peak wave period above 15 s is rarely seen in this period indicating non-dominance of SIO swells. A recent study shows that the SIO swell propagation is more towards BOB during JJA 41 . These points set the background for the explanation of in phase relation of MWP anomalies with SWH in AS.…”

“…First, the 6-hourly values of WPD S1 and WPD E in DJF 2001 are plotted, as shown in Figure 6a. Subsequently, the simultaneous, leading and lagging correlations between them were calculated (Figure 6b) according to the methods of Zheng et al [28] and Gan and Wu [29]. Based on observing the curves of WPD S1 and WPD E , it is difficult to find a good agreement.…”
