Propensity-matched analysis of the gap between capacity and actual performance of dressing in patients with stroke

Abstract: [Purpose] Dressing is an activity of daily living for which stroke patients often show discrepancies between capacity and actual performance. The aim of this study was to elucidate the physical function and unilateral spatial neglect in stroke patients that reduce their level of actual performance despite having the capacity for dressing independently. [Subjects and Methods] This retrospective study included 60 first-time stroke patients judged by occupational therapists as able to dress independently. The pat… Show more

“…Di Monaco et al reported that balance is one of the most significant predictors of functional independence after stroke . Fujita et al noted that frail patients with balance impairments were dependent for toileting . In addition, according to the generalized linear model, motor paresis, cognitive impairment (such as unilateral special neglect and aphasia), diagnosis and the side of the lesion were significantly different between patients who can carry out toileting activities independently and those who cannot.…”

“…It was reported that the items of clothing worn on the lower half of the body were significantly correlated with the physical assessments. In particular, balance and kinaesthetic sensation were related to lower body dressing ability but skin sensations were not (Fujita et al ., ; Walker & Lincoln, ). Lower body dressing of stroke survivors is also suggested to be closely related to good sitting balance which might correlate with the ability to keep a stable posture while working (Hama et al ., ).…”
