Properties and Application of Waterborne Polyurethane/starch Composite Surface Sizing Agent

Abstract: TDI as main isocyanate, IPDI as end-capping reagent, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) surface-sizing agent have been obtained by a pre–polymerization process. WPU were mixed with starch SSA in different proportion and a composite sizing agent obtained. It is indicated the water resistance, gloss and folding resistance of WPU/starch sized papers are much higher than starch sized papers. The ink absorption obviously decreases and the mechanical properties wholly increase. WPU/starch composite emulsions is a new kin… Show more

“…PUDs can be tailored to various applications by varying the preparation method and chemical structure of the polyurethane. Waterborne PUDs have been used particularly as coatings for various fibers, adhesives for alternative substrates, primers for metals, caulking materials, emulsion polymerization media for different monomers, paint additives, defoamers, associate thickeners, pigment pastes, and textile dyes. The early studies of Dieterich et al , on waterborne PUDs are considered the first and inspired much of the work in this field. Anionic colloidal PUDs consist of different chemical species and can be synthesized by a reaction of diisocyanates, polyol, and a dihydroxy acid, such as dimethylolpropanic acid (DMPA), that incorporates carboxylic functionality in the prepolymer backbone.…”

“…Surface sizing agents (SSAs) are used in the paper industry in order to improve the surface physical strength, friction resistance, waterproof and smoothness of paper [1] . The type of SSA has a significant effect on the final product's properties, and the commonly used SSAs include starch, gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, and paraffin wax [2][3][4] .…”
