Properties and Performance of High-Purity Thermal Barrier Coatings

Abstract: It has been found that reducing the level of impurity oxides (particularly SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 ) in 7YSZ, from about 0.2 wt% to below 0.1 wt% raises the sintering resistance and the phase stability of plasma-sprayed coatings. The implications for the usage of these coatings at elevated temperatures are examined. It is concluded that using relatively high-purity powder of this type is likely to confer substantial benefits in terms of the thermomechanical stability of the coatings under service conditions.

“…In fact, high purity specimens contain ~30% of cubic phase and <~1% monoclinic phase [75], even after 100 h at 1400˚C. In fact, the difference between the conductivities of the tetragonal and cubic phases in this system is relatively small [46,47] and can be neglected for most purposes.…”

“…Both the intersplat pores and intrasplat cracks might be healed up, leading to significant stiffening of the top coat. This has a detrimental effect on the strain tolerance of top coat . In addition, the sintering of top coat also leads to an increase in thermal conductivity, resulting in distinct degradation on the thermal barrier performance …”

“…As a result, the accommodation of external stress occurs more extensively in PMMA and dentin. The plasticity of the plasma spraying aluminum oxide is caused by its porosity, insomuch as the plasticity of compacted alumina is almost zero [8]. Human dentin, which is a complicated hierarchic structure, possesses the high porosity, too [9].…”
