Properties and the Hydration of Portland Limestone Cement With Diethanol-Isopropanolamine

Abstract: Diethanol-isopropanolamine (DEIPA) is a new type of alkanolamine used as grinding aids for Portland cement. In this study, the effect of DEIPA on properties of Portland limestone cement (PLC) were investigated by measuring strength of mortar, setting time, compatibility of cement and superplasticizers. A combination of isothermal calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry was used to investigate the hydration kinetics. The results indicate that the addition of DEIPA markedly en… Show more

“…It is well known that cement-based material is a nonhomogeneous and multiphase porous material [1][2][3]. e pore structure (including porosity and pore size distribution) and hydration reaction characteristics (including hydration degree, hydration product type, and quantity) are two key factors that affect the overall performance of cement-based materials [4][5][6][7]. Except for cement clinker, modern cementbased materials usually contain supplementary cementitious materials, such as slag and fly ash [8][9][10].…”

“…Organic alkanolamines such as TEA, DEIPA, and TIPA are very efficient grinding aids and widely used. Often, for quality control and to predict and assess final product properties, contents of these alkanolamines in liquid raw materials of cement grinding aids have to be known [1][2][3][4]. However, these alkanolamines are very polar molecules and are very similar structurally (they differ in the CH 3 group amount and position).…”

“…In order to reduce the CO2 emission of the cement manufacturing, various technologies have been introduced to minimize the carbon footprint of finished cement [1,2] . Diethanol-isopropanolamine (DEIPA, C7H17NO3), a kind of novel alkanolamine, is primarily used as the cement grinding aids interground with the clinker like other alkanolamines such as triethanolamine (TEA) and triisopropanolamine (TIPA) [3,4] . Compared with TEA and TIPA, DEIPA is characterized with low corrosion to the human skin, thus it's safer to use from the perspective of safety and health.…”
