Properties of a three-dimensional photonic jet

Abstract: By focusing light with a sphere several wavelengths in diameter, we can obtain a photonic nanojet [Opt. Express 13, 526 (2005)]: if light is focused on the surface of the sphere, the width of the beam stays smaller than the wavelength along a distance of propagation of approximately two wavelengths and reaches a high intensity. We use the rigorous Mie theory to analyze the basic properties of the photonic jet in the general three-dimensional polarized case. This fast algorithm allows us to determine the influe… Show more

“…11,12 Photonic nanojets are high intensity, narrow, and non-evanescent beams located at the output surface of a lossless dielectric cylinder/sphere when it is illuminated with a plane wave, demonstrating the ability to obtain a resolution of λ0/3 using microspheres, below the diffraction limit. 13,14 Based on this, photonic nanojets have been studied using different properties of the dielectric structure such as non-spherical nanoparticles 15 and also graded index concepts have been applied. 16,17 Besides, experimental demonstration of the backscattering enhancement generated by photonic jets at microwave frequencies has been reported.…”

“…The emergence of photonic nanojets that appear on the shadow-side of illuminated cylindrical particles have been recently studied in very detail [1][2]. The possibility of undergoing the diffraction limit [3] can be useful for various applications such as scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM), high-resolution lithography, advanced optical (and magnetic) data storage schemes, for immersion lens microscopy and for the fluorescence imaging of living cells [4].…”
