Properties of Whistler Waves’ Ducting in Plasmas With Systems of Small‐Scale Density Depletions

I. Yu. Zudin,
T. M. Zaboronkova,
M. E. Gushchin
et al.

Abstract: The ducting of whistler waves by systems of small‐scale field‐aligned plasma density depletions is studied. Similarly to our previous paper (Zudin et al., 2019), we carry out analytical calculations and numerical simulations for the parameters of an active experiment in which very low frequency (VLF) whistler waves emitted by a ground‐based transmitter at a frequency of 18 kHz were received onboard the DEMETER satellite at 700 km above the SURA heating facility. Random‐sized density depletions with a level aro… Show more

“…The mechanism of energizing electrons through whistlers in banded chorus and hiss has been studied numerically in various ways (Hanzelka & Santolík, 2022; Hosseini et al., 2021; Katoh, 2014; Zudin et al., 2023). In the case of the large‐amplitude whistlers, as reported in the Earth's radiation belts (Breneman et al., 2011; Cattell et al., 2008), they were observed to propagate at highly oblique angles.…”
