Proportional electro-hydraulic valves: from analogue to digital control

Abstract: Proportional electro-hydraulic valves are ubiquitous as flow actuators in hydraulic systems. Flow regulation is the result of the accurate positioning of a spool driven by a solenoid and a position sensor. The overall control consists of two hierarchical loops: the inner loop is the solenoid current regulator with a closed-loop bandwidth close to 1 kHz. A modelbased digital regulator of this kind has been presented elsewhere. The outer loop is a position tracking control, in charge of an accurate positioning o… Show more

“…Model-based controllers are more complex than tradition PID; however, they show more potential when dealing with nonlinearity and uncertainty [64]. Since digital controllers are growing in terms of their computing power and control theory development, more controllers and algorithms will be designed and practical applications for Industry 4.0, like the model predictive controller [65] or possibly neural networks [66].…”

“…4,5 For the servo-valve operations, there are numerous publications about various position control logics working with a digital controller including traditional proportional-integral-derivative, velocity feedback, model-based disturbance rejection, and state predictor. [6][7][8][9][10] However, limitation of expanding the control bandwidth might be one of the drawbacks of those feedback control based methods. A representative remedy of the drawback is the addition of feedforward controls.…”
