Proposal and Validation of a Scale of Composite Measure Reactivity Score to Characterize the Reactivity in Horses During Handling

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis study aimed to identify the parameters related to the expression of the reactivity in horses during handling and based on that proposed and validated a scale of composite measure reactivity score to characterize horse's reactivity. To this end, the first stage (S1) proposed the scale and the second (S2) validated it. In S1, 364 Lusitano horses were evaluated, 188 were adult breeding mares (4-12 years old), and 176 were foals (males/ females, aged from 2 months to 2 years). During hooves tri… Show more

“…The animals were evaluated continuously by the same people who did the brushing during 14 days of management regarding behaviour and physiological parameters. The analyzed behavioural parameters consisted of vocalization (adapted from Calviello et al (2016)), sonorization with a threatened tone (snorting), rumination, movement (adapted from Sant'Anna and Paranhos da Costa (2013)), displacement, ear movement (adapted from Calviello et al (2016)), and scores regarding entrance and exit speeds in and out of the squeeze chute (adapted from Lanier and Grandin (2002)). The scores were attributed to the animals as described in Table 1.…”

“…Temperament refers to an individual behavioural response that is repeatable over time in different situations, which includes variety of traits, such as willingness to take risks, exploration, aggressiveness, and avoidance of novelty (Freitas-de-Melo et al, 2019). In horses, individual temperament and reactivity traits may be assessed by their behavioural response during restriction in the chute (Calviello et al, 2016). In our study, we evaluated temperament using a ChT test, with the hypothesis that the behavioural response would indicate the impact of transport on the fitness of horses.…”

“…Age has also been shown to have an effect on reactivity. In a study comparing horses ranging in age from two months to two years, younger horses were more reactive [ 29 ].…”
