Proposal for Flood Risk Mitigation in the Upper Tanaro Valley (Western Alps—North-Western Italy)

Abstract: Flood risk in Italy is a key aspect for the administrative authorities, from the national to the local level. This is especially true in Northern Italy, where the Po River, the most important river of the peninsula, and its river basin are located. In North-Western Italy, the Po Basin is described by numerous sub-basins, among which is the Tanaro River basin: here, in the last decades, floods have produced significant damage, causing an increased concern to local and regional administrations. The main goal of … Show more

“…Therefore, in order to avert extreme results, it is advisable to calculate the arithmetic mean. In this case, the arithmetic mean was calculated using the results derived from the methodologies of Kirpich, Témez, and Giandotti (Equations ( 6)- (8), respectively) [86,88]. (6) where t C = concentration time, in "minutes"; L = main watercourse's length, in km; H MAX = main watercourse's maximum height, in "m";…”

“…Given that the annual maximum daily precipitation is applicable only to events that last an entire day, the coefficient of time distribution assumes key importance. Thus, since a watershed's concentration time is equal to the duration of the precipitation event, if one were to utilize the total level of daily precipitation, it would ultimately result in oversized hydraulic structures [86,88].…”

“…Thus, Garessio, Ceva, and Clavesana are representative of several Italian urban settlements located in flood-related hazardous areas where the scarce extent of the valley floor represents a constraint for urban expansion. Moreover, the Tanaro River catchment represents a well-known open-air laboratory widely considered in research due to its proneness to damaging geo-hydrological events [20,73,[92][93][94][95][96][97][98].…”
