PurposeThe purpose of this paper is twofold: (1) to map and analyze existing complexity typologies and (2) to develop a framework for characterizing complexity-based approaches.Design/methodology/approachThis study was conducted in three stages: (1) initial identification of typologies related to complexity following a structured procedure based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol; (2) backward and forward review to identify additional relevant typologies and (3) content analysis of the selected typologies, categorization and framework development.FindingsBased on 17 selected typologies, a comprehensive overview of complexity studies is provided. Each typology is described considering key concepts, contributions and convergences and differences between them. The epistemological, theoretical and methodological diversity of complexity studies was explored, allowing the identification of the main schools of thought and authors. A framework for characterizing complexity-based approaches was proposed including the following perspectives: ontology of complexity, epistemology of complexity, purpose and object of interest, methodology and methods and theoretical pillars.Originality/valueThis study examines the main typologies of complexity from an integrated and multidisciplinary perspective and, based on that, proposes a novel framework to understanding and characterizing complexity-based approaches.

America presents several problems that demand debates and complex solutions. Many of these problems have historical roots, resulting from the formation process of these countries. However, these problems have worsened in the postpandemic scenario. The COVID-19 pandemic has destroyed social gains developed through years of improvement, causing millions of people to return to the poverty line (CEPAL, 2021;Gideon, 2020; UN, 2022).The region presents several problems that are directly addressed by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) published by the United Nations (UN, 2015). The informality and deterioration of work (linked with the concerns related to decent work -SDG 8), poverty increasement (that is focused by SDG 1 and hinders the combat of hungry SDG 2) and the uncertainty regarding social programs continuity due to high levels of public debt became common concerns in almost all Latin American countries (directly affecting the SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8). Sustainable campuses: Building self-efficacy among academic, staff, and students of Green Office Model

The goal of this study is to draw attention to the critical value of self-efficacy strategies, particularly the Green Office (GO) Model, which aims to improve collaboration among all stakeholders in higher education communities and serves as an example of what a campus sustainability office might entail. A two-step technique guides the research that is presented. To better understand the forces and obstacles preventing the institutionalization of GOs, first the features and similarities of currently existing GOs were examined. Based on this, a peer-to-peer digital training program was created and put to the test with the goal of giving students, employees, and academics the knowledge and abilities they need to start new sustainability offices and enhance the operations of those that already exist. The lack of adaptation of foreign experiences to different university environments, the absence of educational programs, and the scope of public relations were found to be the three key barriers to the spread of the GO model. The results demonstrate that GO offers a reproducible methodology that may be scaled internationally and modified for use in various university situations. The availability and capacity to obtain information from the actors at the sampled colleges outside of the immediate GO community have placed restrictions on this research.
