“…Based on the average of the 2 years, pure alfalfa, pure sainfoin, alfalfa + grass and sainfoin + grass binary mixtures and alfalfa + crested wheatgrass + intermediate wheat grass ternary mixture had relative feed value ranging from 103.09 to 124.55. These values correspond to, grades of 3 or above (Rohweder et al, 1978). All other mixtures studied and all pure grasses except crested wheatgrass were in grade 4 (Tab.…”

“…Overall results of ADF and NDF contents indicated that TT-2008 and P-5683 cultivars, having lower ADF and NDF values throughout the experimental years, had the higher feed quality. Those cultivars also ranked first according to the Feed Quality Ranking List of American Forage and Grassland Council (Rohweder et al, 1978). Many researchers working on alfalfa forage quality indicated that protein and ash content are favourable properties to increase the nutritional value of material whereas cellulose and related derivatives are unfavourable contents (Riday and Brummer, 2005;Dale et al, 2012).…”

“…This study (ROHWEDER et al, 1978). demonstrated that LiCl at 200mg kg -1 was an effective and safe tool for inducing a conditioned aversion against S. bonariense in calves.…”

“…Since S. bonariense is naturally unpalatable, we emulated natural forage scarcity by holding animals in a paddock with water and reduced access to hay. Calves were maintained on a diet of lucerne hay, which was equivalent to 50% of Metabolic Energy (ME) for maintenance requirements for this age and size (Table 1), (ROHWEDER et al, 1978). All animals were observed daily by caretakers, and weighed weekly to avoid significant weight losses which can affect animal welfare.…”
