Proposition of a corrected measure of the Lawton instrumental activities of daily living score

Abstract: Background We aimed to propose a correction of the Lawton instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) score to take into account the possibility to have never done some activities, and measured its agreement and reliability with the usual IADL score. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in outpatients attending French memory clinics between 2014 and 2017. Lawton IADL, cognitive performance, diagnosis, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and sociod… Show more

“…Since there were not much differences between the results of the multivariate logistic regression analysis using the complete dataset and using the imputed dataset (all missing variables), it was assumed that missing data of social activities and depressive symptoms were missing completely at random, and we only selected those subjects who provided available information on social activities and depressive symptoms to conduct further analysis. Multiple imputations were performed using chained equations with 10 iterations to impute missing data [ 30 , 31 ]. The percentage of missing data of each variable was shown in Tables 1 and 2 .…”

“…A 75-item self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the relationship between adherence to a MedDiet, risk of cognitive impairment and ADLs. The questionnaire was divided into six separate sections and included previously validated tools including the Lawton's iADLs scale ( 41 , 42 ), AD8 dementia screening intervention ( 43 45 ), Depression Anxiety Scale (DASS-21) ( 46 ) and the MEDAS ( 47 , 48 ). An additional four questions pertaining to eating behaviors and socialization characteristics related a traditional MedDiet lifestyle were also adapted from the MediCul tool ( 49 ).…”

“…The modified Lawton iADL scale was used to assess functional ability ( 41 ). This previously validated tool comprised of eight questions assessing instrumental activities including: ability to use the telephone, shopping, food preparation, housekeeping, laundry, mode of transportation, responsibility for own medications and ability to handle finances ( 41 , 42 ). For each question, participants were asked to select the option that closely resembles their highest level of function.…”

“…The first step of the comprehensive assessment was to fill in the Older People Data Record Survey with the personal information of the subjects. The other tools were split into two application stages: The first stage consisted of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) (Scarabelot et al, 2019), the second stage consisted of the Clinical and Functional Vulnerability Index (IVCF-20) (Faller et al, 2019), Barthel scale (Yi et al, 2020), Lawton scale (Dufournet et al, 2021) and Tinetti scale (Strini et al, 2021). After the situational diagnosis of the subjects, the data from each assessment tool were gathered in a spreadsheet and in the Older People Data Record Survey for control, analysis, and comparison.…”
