The New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale is the most widely used instrument to assess environmental attitudes (EA). However, the validity of its use in developing countries has been overlooked. Considering the importance of Brazil for the future of the environment, we present two complementary studies to examine how the NEP scale has been used in Brazil, its validity to evaluate Brazilians' EA, and possible ways to improve this instrument. In the first study, we present a systematic review of studies that used the NEP scale (original and revised versions) with Brazilians. In the second study, we conduct an empirical analysis using the revised NEP scale. Results from both studies show that the NEP scale's factorial structure can be influenced by the items' positive and negative wording, Brazilians hold medium-high pro-EA, and that the scale presents low internal consistency. Study 1 showed that the scale's convergent, predictive, and known-group validity differs across studies. In Study 2, the revised NEP scale was significantly associated with connectedness to nature, proenvironmental behavior, gender, and political ideology. These results support its convergent, predictive, and known-group validity. We conclude that the validity of using the NEP scale with Brazilians is questionable and discuss ways of improving this instrument.

Five years after proclamation of the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the United Nations, Spain joined this process of transforming the world socially, economically, and environmentally. This research covers the route taken and results obtained during subsequent years in Spain and proposes, as a general objective, to observe whether it is feasible to work in the technical drawing classroom on an eco-urban project, following the learning approach and method proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2017 Education for Sustainable Development Goals: Learning objectives, in order to reinforce cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral objectives, as well as the key competences established in Sustainable Development Goal 11. The phases of the project were related to the learning objectives and key competences, the results of which were complemented by a questionnaire that provided information on the sustainable consciousness of the students after completing the project, and could serve as a starting point for future educational projects. We agree with other authors, and in particular with UNESCO, that implementation of this type of project in the classroom is a key learning method for SDG.

Adaptación y validación preliminar de la Escala teoría cultural de cosmovisiones ambientales en población chilena

El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo adaptar y aportar evidencias preliminares de validez de la Escala de teoría cultural de cosmovisiones ambientales en el contexto latinoamericano. Se analizaron evidencias de validez de contenido mediante el juicio de cuatro expertos, validez discriminante y convergente, estructura interna a través de análisis factorial exploratorio y confirmatorio, y consistencia interna a través del coeficiente Omega. Mediante un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia, se seleccionaron 500 participantes en edad adulta que residían en la región del Ñuble, Chile. Se obtuvo una versión revisada y adecuada lingüísticamente del instrumento, que presentó coeficientes de concordancia de Kappa que fluctuaron entre considerable y casi perfecto en cuanto a su contenido. Los análisis estadísticos dan cuenta de la idoneidad del instrumento de 15 ítems y un análisis factorial confirmatorio que apoya la estructura interna de cuatro factores (individualismo, igualitarismo, jerarquismo y fatalismo); igual que la versión original. Los coeficientes de consistencia interna fueron aceptables para las cuatro subescalas. Respecto a la validez discriminante se obtuvieron medidas de varianza extraída adecuadas para igualitarismo, jerarquismo y fatalismo (sólo individualismo presentó valores levemente bajo lo esperado), y respecto a la validez convergente se obtuvieron valores adecuados en fiabilidad compuesta para los cuatro factores. Estos hallazgos avalan el uso de la versión en español de la Escala de teoría cultural de cosmovisiones ambientales en población de habla hispana, contribuyendo a la potencial ampliación de estudios socioculturales sobre el medioambiente en Latinoamérica.
