Prospective analysis of complications 30 days after outpatient upper endoscopy

Abstract: More complications were reported by patients 30 days after outpatient upper endoscopy than were discussed at our monthly morbidity and mortality conferences. The most frequent complications reported by patients were sore throat and abdominal pain. The minority of ER/physician visits and hospitalizations were discussed at our morbidity and mortality conferences.

“…Wolfsen et al reported that complications after diagnostic gastroscopy were related to anesthesia in only 2 of the 11.114 patients with or without biopsy. There have been reports concerning rare or severe complications, such as bleeding, perforation, aspiration pneumonia, and Mallory-Weiss syndrome (15)(16)(17)(18). Many minor adverse post-gastroscopy reactions which had no life-threatening consequences, but however brought down the quality of life were disregarded.…”

“…Although the procedure is relatively quick and safe, it does have a complication rate of about 1.3-2.4 per 1000 procedures [1,2]. Few studies have examined the serious complications of upper GI endoscopy; these complications may include respiratory compromise and hypoxia, perforations in the hypopharynx, esophagus, stomach and duodenum, post-biopsy gastric and duodenal wall hematomas and bleeding from an ulcer biopsy [3].…”

In addition, reported complication rates at 30 days are higher for therapeutic studies when compared to diagnostic studies [1].…”
