Prospective clinical study of endoscopic ultrasound‐guided biliary drainage using novel balloon catheter (with video)

Abstract: Although additional cases and a randomized controlled comparison with another dilation technique such as the graded dilation or cystotome dilation technique are needed, our technique may be helpful for EUS-guided biliary drainage.

“…Although electrocautery can certainly be used to dilate the fistula, there is a risk of burns, which can lead to bleeding . Therefore, a dilation technique using a fine‐gauge balloon catheter may be suitable from the perspective of prevention of adverse events . However, as there is no evidence to suggest which dilation devices should be used, a randomized controlled trial evaluating various dilation devices should be carried out in the future.…”

“…Recently, a fine-gauge balloon dilator has become available. 24,25 The tip is tapered to less than 3 Fr in diameter and is coaxial with a 0.025-inch guidewire. After puncturing the bile duct with a 19-G FNA needle, the balloon catheter can be easily inserted without any dilation devices.…”
