Prospective evaluation of C-reactive protein, smoking and lung cancer death in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Abstract: Abstract.Chronic inflammation plays an important role in lung carcinogenesis. Few prospective studies have examined associations between lung cancer, serum C-reactive protein (CRP), a measure of systemic inflammation, and inflammatory lifestyle factors, such as smoking and obesity. This study prospectively examined the relationship between CRP and lung cancer death and its interrelationships with several lifestyle factors. Baseline data on smoking and other lifestyle variables were collected for 8,950 particip… Show more

“…CRP is an acute phase protein, which is produced in response to innate pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and IL-1 45,46 . Low level elevations of CRP have been shown to correlate with childhood exposure to parental neglect 47 and to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease 48,49 and cancer 50 . Our results are in line with those of other studies which have examined a wider set of inflammatory markers 19,3941 .…”

“…There are consistent reports on plasma PLP as a predictor of cancer in the lungs 6,7 and other organs. 19 Plasma PLP is the most commonly used marker of vitamin B6 status, but plasma PLP concentrations are reduced by several factors linked to lung cancer carcinogenesis or progression, such as smoking, 21 inflammation measured as CRP [22][23][24] and increased level of alkaline phosphatase. 25 On the other hand, inflammation and elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are not associated with impaired vitamin B6 availability in tissues.…”

“…Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in both men and women worldwide (1), accounting for approximately 28% of all cancer deaths (2). In 2012, more than 1.8 million newly diagnosed lung cancer cases and about 1.6 million deaths were estimated (3).…”
