Prospective evaluation of indirect costs due to acute rotavirus gastroenteritis in Spain: the ROTACOST study

Abstract: BackgroundThe effect of rotavirus in developed countries is mainly economic. This study aimed to assess the indirect costs induced by rotavirus acute gastroenteritis (RVAGE) in Spain.MethodsA prospective observational study was conducted from October 2008 to June 2009. It included 682 children up to 5 years of age with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) who attended primary care (n = 18) and emergency room/hospital settings (n = 10), covering the regions of Galicia and Asturias (North-west Spain). All non-medical exp… Show more

“…Although these costs represent a signi cant proportion of the economic burden of disease, the clinical burden of RV disease is much higher in primary care, and the indirect costs assumed by families are not negligible. The study by Bouzón-Alejandro et al [30] prospectively assessed indirect costs related to RVGE in Spain, showing a mean cost per case of 192.7€ (SD 219.8€). Therefore, additional research contributing to the global economic impact of disease estimation is warranted.…”

“…A prospective observational study conducted from October 2008 to June 2009 covering the regions of North-west Spain concluded that indirect societal costs due to ARGE in children up to 5 years old (~192·7€ per family) were 1·74-fold higher compared with AGEs of other etiologies [30]. Although the aim of our work was not determining societal costs, the projection of such value to the 709 hospital admissions avoided during the vaccination period would allow us to estimate an approximate additional saving of €136 624; of which, €85 364 would be due to absenteeism.…”

“…EuroRotaNet, a European laboratory network with 16 participating countries, found that G1P [8], G2P [4], G3P [8], G4P [8], G9P [8] were the most prevalent human RV genotypes across Europe [12]. However, there was a huge diversity of cocirculating strains, and the prevalence of the different RV types varied geographically and from year to year.…”
