Prospective histologic evaluation of intra-abdominal prosthetics four months after implantation in a rabbit model

Abstract: The four prosthetic materials evaluated in this study demonstrate comparable host biocompatibility as evidenced by the tissue ingrowth. Scar plate formation around DualMesh was significantly less than that around Composix and Marlex. Interestingly, more inflammatory cells were noted surrounding the DualMesh which was equal to that of the heavyweight meshes. Proceed, a midweight polypropylene mesh, has the potential for improved patient tolerance compared to heavyweight polypropylene meshes based on its favorab… Show more

“…This long-term mesh-induced concern has been reported to lead to adverse clinical outcomes also [7]. Reducing the polypropylene content and increasing the pore size of the mesh is supposed to offer better benefit-torisk ratio [8]. The possibility that change of prosthetic architecture will be beneficial is considered an incentive for mesh manufacturers as well [9].…”

“…The delay allows the fibrin clots to be invaded by fibroblasts, macrophages, and new blood vessels, thus allowing a maturation of a fibrin clot into tissue adhesions [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] .…”

“…7 In addition, chronic pain is thought to occur due to excessive inflammatory response to the synthetic mesh with reduction in tissue compliance and entrapment of neural structure 8 . Heavy-weight meshes contain high concentrations of foreign material and cause excessive inflammatory response 9 . Light-weight meshes have larger pores and they encourage collagen production with integration of the mesh into the abdominal wall with adequate inflammatory response.…”
