“…The purpose of this study was to examine future orientation (FO), conceptualized as the self-reported and conscious cognitive representations that individuals develop about their future (Seginer, 2009), in a sample of Portuguese emerging adults. Adopting a thematic approach (Seginer, 2009), we used the Hopes and Fears Questionnaire (HFQ; Nurmi, Seginer, & Poole, 1990), an open-ended measure that assesses FO’s thematic content (i.e., which hopes/fears individuals have concerning their future) and temporal extension (i.e., how far into the chronological future they expect their hopes/fears will be materialized). Exploration for education, occupation, or family was assessed by asking three questions, respectively, concerning the extent to which the participants had sought information and planned for this domain of their lives (e.g., “How often do you think about your studies and plan your future education?”).…”

“…However, the majority assess only the future time period. These include the Future Orientation Questionnaire (Nurmi, Seginer, & Poole, 1990), the Measure of Perceived Life Chances (Jessor, Donovan, & Costa, 1990), the State Hope Scale (Snyder et al, 1996; Snyder, Lopez, Shorey, Rand, & Feldman, 2003), and the Life Orientation Test (Scheier & Carver, 1985), a measure of optimism. Two time attitude measures assess multiple time periods.…”
