Prospective study of immunological factors in non-inflammatory bowel disease enterocutaneous fistulas

Abstract: BackgroundEnterocutaneous fistulas (ECF) are debilitating and usually result following complex abdominal surgery. While there is an association with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a large number of fistulas occur after surgery not related to IBD. The consequences of ECF include short bowel syndrome and the need for long term parenteral nutrition.ECF can heal spontaneously and in the case of IBD can be cured by medical therapy in some instances. Those that do not resolve spontaneously have to be cured by sur… Show more

“…TNF is a proinflammatory cytokine that induces the production of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-6 cytokines, increases leukocyte mobility, and enhances capillary permeability, leading to a continuous inflammatory response that can hinder tissue healing. Therefore, therapies that can target this mechanism, such as administration of ASC, have the potential to facilitate the tissue healing process 2 , 40 , 41 .…”

“…In fact, there is currently a study under way in the United Kingdom that will evaluate the presence or absence of TNF expression on ECF. The results of these studies will help us learn the true efficacy of biological therapies in these patients (9).…”
