Prospective study of myringoplasty using different approaches

Abstract: In repairing tympanic membrane perforations similar success rates are achieved with postaural or endaural approaches. A permeatal approach is most limited in the exposure obtained. What is important in choosing the appropriate approach is the location and size of the perforation and size of external auditory canal.

“…The post auricular route procedure is occasionally associated with post surgery itching, deformity of pinna, visible scar abnormal, or decreased sensation in post auricular region. [2] However, the mini-endaural route, permeatal or post auricular route apparently do not differ in terms of hospital stay or hearing gain.…”

“…The grafts were taken up successfully by majority (88% and 90%), irrespective of the surgical approach used and did not differ in terms of hearing gain; this is commensurate with what is already reported. [2] This is understandable as the hearing restoration depends on the graft being taken up successfully. Similar observation has been made by Sharma, et al [2] as well.…”

“…The aim of the operation includes perforation closure with a dry stable grafted membrane and improvement in hearing levels. Grafting the tympanic membrane with autologous temporal fascia helps in restoration of its integrity, as temporalis fascia is a thin, non-shrinking tissue with low metabolic rate resembling tympanic membrane in texture and structure [2]. Outcome for treatment of this disease has been based on measures such as audiograms, number of office visits required, and sequential physical examinations [3].…”
