Due to the lack of effective impact assessment, urban renewal in China is facing many challenges and dilemmas. Residents’ perceptions are important for the sustainability of urban renewal. This study evaluated the impacts of urban renewal on the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of a neighborhood via a case study of Banan, Chongqing, China. According to the analysis of the questionnaires and in-depth interviews and with local residents, Banan’s urban renewal led to both positive and negative impacts. This study proposed strategic approaches to realizing sustainable neighborhood during urban renewal in China according to impacts. Based on the analysis, strategies for creating sustainable neighborhoods during urban renewal were developed, including balancing of economic, social, and environmental interests, satisfying residents’ needs, and enhancing innovation. The impact of urban renewal in Banan was evaluated based on the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of a neighborhood, and the findings will be useful for policy makers and researchers engaged in sustainable urban renewal to refine their strategy.

Data about system that could be used in urban housing Construction process, renewal and upgrading is presented in this data article. Urban upgrading has been widely recognized as an essential issue in developing sustainable built environment. The aim is to identify the system approach that could be used for renewing and upgrading urban housing generally with view to expanding cities, redevelopment, redesigning and beautification of settlement layout, upgrading of facilities and public goods and services, repair, construction and silting of drainage system. Stratified survey method was used in generating the data, through identifying the current housing system in some selected locations in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria, examining the factors that affects urban housing renewal and upgrading, identifying and examine the system approaches for urban housing renewal and upgrading and to develop a template for alternative material intervention for urban housing. The data was generated through questionnaire survey of 100 respondents; through Stratified sampling technique. Data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) with Descriptive Statistics such as percentage distribution, charts and relative agreement index for the interpretation of findings. Data was presented on system that could be used in urban construction process, renewal and upgrading as includes: Redevelopment system, Revitalization system, Rehabilitation system, Regeneration system, Integration system, Conservation system and Afforestation system.

Urban renewal and sustainable development are two popular issues in both policy agenda and academia. Although their importance has been increasingly recognized, an integrated review covering sustainability, planning, and urban renewal has yet to be produced. Based on 81 journal papers, this paper presents a critical review of recent studies on sustainable urban renewal over the period 1990 to 2012. The review focuses on the planning sub-system and the social sub-system of urban renewal in terms of the evaluation of sustainability. The complexity of achieving sustainable urban renewal is emphasized and discussed.To better clarify the mechanism behind the urban renewal process and improve urban sustainability, recommendations of future research directions are also provided.
