“…Also, it has been shown that the conformation changes are responsible for the orientation of molecules in the smectic layers, the layer spacing and the mechanical and shock‐sensitive FLC alignment in the cells and displays . Taking into account these requirements and the new approach to preparing anisotropic compounds from 3,6‐disubstituted cyclohex‐2‐enones and other similar intermediates , we synthesized the mesomorphic chiral poly‐ p ‐phenylenes ( I‐V ) with different lateral substituents and investigated the relevant relationships between their properties and the molecular structure.

“…We propose to use the substituted cyclohexenones, isoxazolines, and similar to them polyfunctional compounds as the key intermediates for the preparation of different types of anisotropic substances and materials. It was found that anisotropic Mannich salts ( 1 ), UV curable substituted vinylketones ( 2 ), various of cyclohexene, phenylcyclohexane, biphenyl, terphenyl, or quaterphenyl derivatives, the LC compounds with negative dielectric anisotropy ( 3‐6 ), which form, as rule, nematic phase at low temperature and in a wide temperature range and are characterized a high value of negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε = −5‐7), can be successfully prepared using this approach.…”
