Prostacyclin and hormone levels in patients with symptoms of miscarriage and infection

Abstract: During pregnancy, acsending infection into the uterus, is followed by local increase of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity, and consequently elevated prostaglandin production. Subclinical infections of fetal amniotic membranes are well known to cause preterm delivery. Spreading of infection from vagina and cervix into uterine cavity, can be tragic for the fetus. The aim of this study was to reveal wether lower genital tract infections are associated with symptoms of threatened miscarriage. Our investigation inc… Show more

“…When group B streptococci were injected into the amniotic fluid in preterm rhesus monkeys, amniotic fluid cytokine concentrations increased, followed by production of the prostaglandins E 2 and F 2α , and finally uterine contractions ( Gravett et al 1994 ). Similarly, in humans, preterm labor due to infection is thought to be initiated by cytokines, including interleukin-(IL)1, tumor necrosis factor, and IL-6, produced by macrophages ( Cram et al 2002 ; Mitreski and Radeka 2002 ; Narahara and Johnston 1993 ).…”

“…1 ). Studies have shown direct relationships between increased prostacyclin levels and pregnancy complications including SAB 24 . Prostacyclin inhibits platelet activation and is a vasodilator.…”

Additionally, entry of PM into the body by this method may lead to oxidative inflammation in lungs and other organs, including the placenta, thereby increasing the susceptibility of the mother to begin preterm labor .…”
