Prostaglandin based estrus synchronization in cattle: A review

Abstract: Reproductive cyclicity provides cattle with repeated opportunities to become pregnant. Understanding the physiology and endocrinology of the estrus cycle gives a great opportunity for reproductive management and control of the estrus cycle. To manage and control the cycle, there are lot of assisted reproductive technologies, of them estrus synchronization with prostaglandins (PGF2α) is the one. PGF2α is known to have the ability to regress the corpus luteum (CL). The success of the synchronization program is l… Show more

“…The score BCS 2.5-3 was selected and then used in the study. Under conditions of BCS ≤ 2.5, the livestock experienced malnutrition, which caused disruption to the estrous cycle of rete conception [16,17]. Bihon and Assyfa [17] state that synchronization implemented with poor-body-conditioned animals results in a low level of response to estrus and pregnancy rates.…”

Bihon and Assyfa [17] state that synchronization implemented with poor-body-conditioned animals results in a low level of response to estrus and pregnancy rates. On the other hand, livestock that are too fat will experience problems with conception and abnormalities in the reproductive cycle [18,15].…”

“…The success of the estrus synchronization is determined by intrinsic factors (proper diet, BCS, health) of cows and extrinsic factors such as correct heat detection techniques. The inadequacy of those factors resulted in the estrus synchronization to be not as expected (Bihon and Assefa, 2021). Estrus synchronization must be accompanied by careful estrus detection to achieve a high conception rate (Syafruddin et al, 2016).…”
