Prostate cancer metastasis to the mandible: case report

Abstract: Prostate cancer is recognised to be the commonest type of malignancy in the male in many parts of the world. Prostate cancer has a propensity to metastasize to bone, however metastasis to the jaw is uncommon and indeed among metastatic tumours of the jaws which are a rarity, only about 9% originate from a prostatic primary. We report a case of histologically proven metastatic prostate cancer to the right mandible which necessitated a hemi-mandibulectomy in order to improve the patient's quality of life.

“…Therefore, most metastases will be osteoblastic although they have also been reported in a mixed, osteolytic form, even without radiological evidence. As with other mandibular neoplasms, diagnosis is not unusual after pain or paresthesiahypoesthesia of the inferior dental nerve that does not improve after dental treatments [8][9][10][11] . They have not only been reported at mandibular level, but also in branches 12 , condyles 13 and parotid glands with bone infiltration 14 .…”

“…A variant of PC3 which has a higher incidence of metastasis, PC3M, also forms osteolytic metastases (frequently within the mandible) after orthotopic and intracardiac injection [63,64]. Mandibular metastases in prostate cancer (and cancer in general) is an uncommon, but devastating event [65].…”
