Prostatic schistosomosis by Schistosoma Mansoni in a patient with prostatic adenocarcinoma: case report / Esquistossomose prostática por Schitosoma Mansoni em paciente com adenocarcinoma prostático: relato de caso

Abstract

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic infectious disease of global relevance and endemic in Brazil, especially in the state of Minas Gerais. However, genitourinary involvement by Schistosoma mansoni is not frequent, with S. haematobium being the primary cause for this ectopic infection. In the present study, we report a case of prostatic schistosomiasis identified incidentally in a biopsy of a patient with prostatic adenocarcinoma. Current studies show that the inflammation resulting from the presence of the parasite's eggs generates an oncogenic environment and indicates a possible association of schistosomiasis with the development of adenocarcinoma-however, few cases are described in world literature.
