Prosthetic and orthotic options for lower extremity amputation and reconstruction

Abstract: Lower extremity injury and deformity can result from a number of etiologies. Regardless of the underlying cause, the decision to pursue amputation or reconstruction of a lower limb is challenging for both patients and practitioners. This decision is largely dependent on the patient's premorbid health and function, functional goals and preferences, and characteristics and viability of the affected limb. The role of adaptive devices following surgery should never be underestimated. Advances in prostheses and ort… Show more

“…The piezoelectric generates AC power, which is supplied directly into the trouser pocket's charging pad (transmitter). The piezoelectric generator's battery charging efficiency is tested experimentally to find the best material and number of piezoelectric plates to employ for this purpose [5]. As long as the user wears footwear with the implanted plate while walking, the piezoelectric generator will be able to provide a steady supply of power to the charging pad.…”

“…After lower limb loss, assistive devices are a fundamental part of rehabilitation with the aim to restore daily activities and improve quality of life [ 3 – 5 ]. A prosthesis is generally favoured among assistive devices as it enables one to carry out daily activities as naturally as possible [ 4 , 6 , 7 ]. It additionally helps to enhance self-esteem as it ensures that people diverge as little as possible from the physical appearance of able-bodied individuals [ 8 ].…”
