Prosthodontic Complications of Metal‐Ceramic and All‐Ceramic, Complete‐Arch Fixed Implant Prostheses with Minimum 5 Years Mean Follow‐Up Period. A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

Abstract: MC and AC CFIDPs presented with veneer fractures as primary complication. This may require significant maintenance. Other complications were negligible after a mean follow-up period of at least 5 years. More long-term studies, especially on all-ceramic CFIDPs are needed.

“…The longitudinal effectiveness of the MR IFCDPs against maxillary complete dentures has been demonstrated in the literature, with considerably high rates of technical complications like wear and chipping encountered as a result of material fatigue and stress . Studies have also reported on the incidence of complications with ceramic type IFCDPs . While no studies have been identified directly comparing intra‐group ceramic IFCDPs to MR IFCDPs, it must be mentioned that there is paucity of reports on complications with ceramic IFCDPs for edentulous jaws with observation periods of at least 5 years conversely with the MR design …”

“…The treatment modality of using MR IFCDPs has been well documented longitudinally, and increased technical complication rates in terms of chipping and wear have been reported. Regarding MC IFCDPs, Wong et al's systematic review reported that porcelain veneer fracture was the most common technical complication in studies with at least a 5‐year follow‐up …”

“…Moreover, layered restorations showed 5-year success rates significantly lower than monolithic prostheses (i.e. 60.4% vs 90.9%) [169]. Consequently, the use of full-arch, extended zirconia restorations should always be carefully evaluated and further long-term clinical studies are necessary to validate the effectiveness of their serviceability.…”
