Prosthodontic Rehabilitation of a Patient with Missing Teeth and Loss of Vertical Dimension Using Telescopic Overdentures

Abstract: Overdentures are one of the most sought-after treatment options for patients with few remaining natural teeth. They are desired as they tend to preserve the natural teeth and its intact periodontium. This helps in reducing the residual ridge resorption and preserve proprioception. These characteristics offer better masticatory ability in patients rehabilitated with overdentures when compared to conventional complete dentures. Enhancements such as telescopic denture for better retention prove to be efficient cl… Show more

“…Study models with subsequent assembly in semi-adjustable articulators can favour planning, as can diagnostic wax-ups and mock-ups. In addition, imaging tests such as panoramic and periapical radiographs, cephalometric tracings, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, intraoral and extraoral photographs can complement the case information 1,6,7,[9][10][11][12]14 .…”

“…In addition, other disorders such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease have also shown an increased incidence in this period. When associated, parafunctional habits and gastroesophageal reflux disease can promote excessive tooth wear 1,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12] .…”

“…The advantages of preserving and using the remaining teeth include a reduced need for surgeries to install implants, bone grafts due to bone scarcity makes the treatment less costly, in addition to preservation of alveolar bone, the periodontal ligament, proprioception, and good masticatory efficiency. [33][34][35][36] However, several factors such as age, bone and mucosal tissue, hygiene, number, and position of remaining teeth must be taken into account when choosing whether the treatment will be performed on the remaining teeth or implants and the retention system. 27 The most important thing to consider is the personalization of the treatment to benefit and prolong the rehabilitation of individual patients as much as possible.…”
