Amazonia is an invaluable global asset for all its ecological and cultural significance. Indigenous peoples and their lands are pivotal in safeguarding this unique biodiversity and mitigating global climate change. Understanding the causal structure behind variation in the degree of environmental conservation across different indigenous lands–each with varying institutional, legal, and socioenvironmental conditions–is an essential source of information in the struggle for long-term sustainable management of Amazonian ecosystems. Here, we use data from the Instituto Socioambiental for 361 indigenous lands in the Brazilian Amazon coded for environmental integrity, territorial integrity, legal stability, indigenous governance, and threats due to infrastructure projects. Using Bayesian networks to learn the causal structure amongst these variables reveals two causal pathways leading to environmental integrity. One causal pathway starts with territorial integrity and is mediated by infrastructure projects, while the other is directly from legal stability. Hence, safeguarding indigenous lands from exploitation is best accomplished via legal land rights and stricter enforcement instead of placing the onus on indigenous governance, which is also a direct outcome of legal stability.

This study addresses the social and environmental repercussions on Amazonian communities due to gold mining following the conclusion of official concessions. Framed within the literature on natural resource extraction, sustainability, and social impacts in developing countries, the work employs qualitative methods, including interviews with residents and field observations in the community of Yutzupino in the Ecuadorian Amazon. It reveals that post-concession mining, often informal and illegal, sharply triggers social and environmental degradation. The research emphasises the need to incorporate sustainability principles into mining concessions to prevent such effects. This analysis enhances understanding of the complex socio-ecological aftermath of mining in vulnerable environments. It proposes recommendations for mitigation, underlining the importance of dialogue between communities, governments, and mining companies.

La provisión de alimentos es un objetivo principal a considerar en cualquier plan de desarrollo económico, urbanístico y social. Los sistemas alimentarios convencionalizados contribuyen a fenómenos meteorológicos extremos, la degradación del suelo y la pérdida de la biodiversidad. Para hacer frente a estos desafíos es necesario un enfoque sostenible, garantizando alimentos suficientes para cubrir los estándares de nutrición y de bienestar, sin poner en riesgo las bases económicas, sociales y ambientales para las generaciones futuras. Este trabajo estudia las implicaciones de los sistemas alimentarios y el valor de la agroecología para diseñar escenarios de ruralización de las áreas urbanas para proporcionar alimentos seguros y nutritivos de forma sostenible. Los usos del suelo urbano deben contribuir a construir paisajes destinados a sanar, conectar y potenciar las relaciones entre los actores del territorio con la Naturaleza. Las áreas periurbanas pueden ser planificadas para el desarrollo de la agroecología recreativa, combinando naturaleza, producción sostenible, conservación del paisaje, recreación, preservación del patrimonio cultural y servicios eco-educativos. El uso del suelo urbano a través de soluciones proambientales innovadoras puede apoyar el sistema de resiliencia verde, eco-orientando los usos del suelo a los ecosistemas urbanos y servir para mejorar la calidad de vida en la ciudad.
