Protective Behavior Survey, West Nile Virus, British Columbia

Abstract: We investigated personal protective behaviors against West Nile virus infection. Barriers to adopting these behaviors were identified, including the perception that DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide and related compounds) is a health and environmental hazard. Televised public health messages and knowing that family or friends practiced protective behaviors were important cues to action.

“…Increased knowledge and use of plant based repellent against mosquito bites in the community suggests that local people also see the advantages of plant-derived products over imported synthetic repellents or chemical pesticides [ 22 ]. Synthetic chemicals such as organochlorides do not readily degrade in nature and have been identified as ubiquitous pollutants in aquatic ecosystems [ 24 , 25 ]. Concern about the deleterious effects associated with synthetic acaricides and insecticides has revived interest in plants as alternative pesticides for medical, veterinary and crop protection [ 8 ].…”

“…The availability of natural product-based repellents provides important environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic repellents. Concerns have been raised by many about the safety of synthetic repellents such as DEET for environmental and human health [ 17 ]. Repellents are a key method for preventing tick bites, which are responsible for the transmission of a variety of zoonotic diseases, including Lyme disease.…”

“…Several studies examining protective behavior toward WNv have included various measures of risk perception [ 6 13 ]. These studies have shown that perception of WNv risk is among the significant predictors of protective behavior, but they have not elaborated how individuals perceive this risk.…”

“…Studies of WNv have also identified a number of other factors affecting protective behavior [ 6 , 8 , 10 13 , 17 , 18 ]. While sometimes informally used, these factors have been consistent with the Health Belief Model (HBM) with respect to addressing perceived severity and perceived susceptibility to WNv as behavioral predictors.…”
