Protective Effect of Alpha-Lipoic Acid on Cypermethrin-Induced Oxidative Stress in Wistar Rats

Abstract: Cypermethrin (CY), a class II pyrethroid pesticide, is globally used to control insects in the household and in agriculture. Despite beneficial roles, its uncontrolled and repetitive application leads to unintended effects in non-target organisms. In light of the relevant anti-oxidant properties of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), in the work described herein we tested the effect of a commercially available ALA formulation on cypermethrin (CY)-induced oxidative stress in Wistar rats. The rats were orally administered … Show more

“…Lipoic acid protects against the effects of Bisphenol A or Bi-n-butyl phthalate on testicular mitochondrial toxicity [210,211]. In various other models it also protects against the toxic effects of acetaminophen [212], acrolein [213], cyclosporine [214], indomethacin [215], paraquat [216] and rotenone [217] as well as cypermethrin [218], dimethoate, glyphosate and zineb [219],chrysene [220] lindane [221] and Tetrachlorodibenzodioxin [222]. Lipoic acid and other antioxidants have also been used in the clinical management and prevention of heavy metal intoxication [223].…”

“…It is broadly used in many countries among which Cameroon, because of its efficacy at low doses. Cypermethrin is intensely and globally employed to control a large variety of pests in agriculture and some human and domestic animals ectoparasites (Raina et al, 2010;Mignini et al, 2013;Sparks, 2013;Madhubanti et al, 2014). In spite of these beneficial roles of cypermethrin, its excessive and non controlled use affects non target organisms (Singh et al, 2012).…”

“…Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is an organosulfur compound derived from octanoic acid [18] . ALA contains 2 sulfur atoms (at C6 and C8) connected by a disulfide bond and is thus considered to be oxidized although either sulfur atom can exist in higher oxidation states [18,19] .…”

“…ALA contains 2 sulfur atoms (at C6 and C8) connected by a disulfide bond and is thus considered to be oxidized although either sulfur atom can exist in higher oxidation states [18,19] . The carbon atom at C6 is chiral and the molecule exists as 2 enantiomers (R)-(+)-lipoic acid and (S)-(-)-lipoic acid and as a racemic mixture (R/S)-lipoic acid (R/S-LA) [19] .…”
