Protective effect of latex of Calotropis procera in Freund's Complete Adjuvant induced monoarthritis

Abstract: The protective effect of latex of Calotropis procera in Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) induced monoarticular arthritis was evaluated in rats. Arthritis was induced by a single intra-articular injection of 0.1 mL of 0.1% FCA in the right ankle joint. The effect of dried latex (DL, 200 and 400 mg/ kg) and its methanol extract (MeDL, 50 and 500 mg/ kg) following oral administration was evaluated on joint inflammation, hyperalgesia, locomotor function and histology at the time of peak inflammation. The effects o… Show more

“…However, there is a prevalence of use on inflammatory-related problems. In this case, the ethnopharmacological use of Calotropis procera does not deserve confirmation, since Kumar and co-workers have largely confirmed this folk usage by different experimental approaches and inflammatory models investigated (Kumar and Roy, 2009;Bharti et al, 2010). It is therefore important to advance in understanding mechanisms underlying anti-inflammation; identifying molecules involved and establishing safe use of latex.…”

“…The anti-inflammatory effect of stem barks of the first plant has been reported, along with protective effect of latex of the plant against Freund's Complete Adjuvant induced monoarthritis. 15,16 As such, it would be of interest to scientifically study the leaves of this plant as to their effectiveness in relieving pain arising from rheumatism. S. macrophylla is used in traditional medicines of India for treatment of rheumatism.…”

“…Similarly, methanolic extract of Calotropis procera Latex provides protection against inflammation and oxidative stress in Freund's complete adjuvant-induced monoarthritis in rats. [127] Similarly, Tocotrienols, the unsaturated forms of vitamin E found in tobacco leaves function as efficient antioxidants and protect membrane lipids from peroxidation. [128] Synadenium grantii shows antioxidant/oxidative properties and inhibit production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and show strong ferric ion reducing power (FRAP), and lipid peroxidation thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) activity.…”

“…[131] Similarly, Calotropis procera (family: Apocynaceae) possesses potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. [127] The protein fraction of latex of Calotropis procera shows relieve from inflammation and pain felt by arthritic patient. [127] It shows similar properties when used in animal models.…”
