Protective effect of pomegranate (Punica granatum) extract against diabetic changes in adult male rat liver: Histological study

Abstract: Background:Diabetes mellitus could be result from disorders in insulin secretion or receptors, characterized by hyperglycemia. Natural antioxidants including pomegranate have hypoglycemic effect.Aim of the Work:The present research was designed to evaluate the possible protective role of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) against diabetic-induced hepatic complication.Materials and Methods:Forty-eight male Wistar rats, weighed 200–250 g and aged 3 months, were sorted into four groups: Group 1: Used as control, Grou… Show more

“…Treatment of diabetic rats with F. carica , L. sativum , and P. granatum at the dosages used moderated the activity of those enzymes in plasma compared to the diabetic untreated group and thus alleviating the liver damage caused by STZ-induced diabetes [ 48 ].…”

“…L. sativum [ 49 ] and P. granatum [ 50 , 51 ] significantly decreased blood glucose levels when compared to controls, with enhanced body weight, which could be attributed to better control of the diabetic rats' hyperglycemic state [ 48 ].…”

“…In addition, the mixed solution of methanolic pomegranate peel powder was filtered twice. Finally, this mixture was evaporated at 50 °C using rotary evaporation (Rotavapor, Stuart, England) [ 28 ]. The resulting raw PPE was then red-balanced to 500 gm and kept in a deep freezer at 5 °C until further use in our experimental study.…”

“…Tashakori-Sabzevar et al, (2016) investigated the effects of celery seed extract on different biochemical factors and histopathological changes in normal and streptozotocin (STZ)induced diabetic rats reduced serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Faddladdeen and Ojaimi (2019) found that pomegranate peel extract (PPE) against diabetic-induced hepatic complication reduced alanine aminotransferase, alanine phosphatase, and aspartate aminotransferase levels in rats. Table (5 It could be observed that the mean value of uric acid of control (+) group was higher than control (-) group, being 2.93±0.005 and 1.12±0.003 mg/dl respectively.…”
