Protective Effect of Total Panax Notoginseng Saponins on Retinal Ganglion Cells of an Optic Nerve Crush Injury Rat Model

Abstract: Irreversible loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) is a common pathological feature of various optic nerve degenerative diseases such as glaucoma and ischemic optic neuropathy. Effective protection of RGCs is the key to successful treatment of these diseases. Total Panax notoginseng saponins (TPNS) are the main active component of Panax notoginseng, which has an inhibitory effect on the apoptosis pathway. This study is aimed at assessing the protective effect of TPNS on RGCs of the optic nerve crush (ONC) mode… Show more

“…Apoptosis stimulation can lead to dephosphorylation of BAD, which activates Bax and Caspase-3 (Zhong et al, 2021). Caspase is only activated when caspase is cleaved and initiator caspases, such as caspase-3, are activated.…”

“…These phytochemicals have been shown to protect RGCs. Total Panax notoginseng saponin treatment increased RGC survival and inhibited the cell apoptosis pathway induced by an optic nerve crush rat model [190]. Similarly, ginsenoside Rg1 treatment was able to reduce RGC damage in an ultrasound-targeted microbubble optic nerve damage rabbit model [191].…”

“…The optic nerve crush (ONC) is a commonly used model to study optic nerve injury and glaucoma in addition to the survival and regeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) [1,2] and the effects of drug or other therapeutic interventions on RGCs [3][4][5][6][7][8]. It provides good repeatability and simple operation.…”
