Protective effect of traditional Chinese medicine on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and liver cancer by targeting ferroptosis

Abstract: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease with high incidence and is closely related to metabolic syndrome. If not controlled, it may eventually become hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Ferroptosis, a non-apoptotic form of programmed cell death (PCD), is closely related to NAFLD and HCC, and the mechanisms of action involved are more complex. Some studies have demonstrated that many drugs inhibit ferroptosis and protect liver steatosis or carcinogenesis. The role of Traditional Chinese… Show more

“…Currently, there are no definitive effective drugs for the improvement of liver disease, such as ALI, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and LF. In addition, drug resistance in cancer treatment has always been an issue at present [ 13 ]. Therefore, it is urgent to develop safe and effective drugs.…”

“…NAC, including TCM, have become an important source for the development of drugs targeting ferroptosis due to their high therapeutic potential and low toxicity. Among them, various flavonoids and terpenoids have been reported to exert certain curative effects on liver disease via targeting ferroptosis [ 13 , 14 ]. Here, we summarize the therapeutic impact of newly discovered NAC on treating main liver disease and the potential mechanisms of regulating ferroptosis ( Figure 3 ).…”

“…In the realm of TCM, HCC is classified under several categories, including “hepatoma,” “accumulation,” and “Zheng Gan.” These classifications within TCM represent different perspectives and approaches to understanding and managing the condition based on traditional Chinese medical principles. 35 HCC is indeed characterized by a multifaceted etiology, diverse pathogenesis, and a wide range of symptoms and manifestations. In the realm of TCM, the approach to treating HCC typically revolves around principles that include minimizing adverse reactions, bolstering the patient's immune response, improving their overall quality of life, and extending their survival time.…”

“…Traditional Chinese medicine formulas (TCM) have been effectively used for decades to treat NAFLD, benefiting a large number of patients by ameliorating symptoms, reducing enzyme levels, and protecting the liver [ 7 , 8 ]. Among these formulations, the Huanglian-Hongqu herb pair (HH) stands out as a noteworthy herbal combination in TCM, comprising Huanglian ( Coptis chinensis Franch.)…”
