Protective Effects of Bee Pollen on Multiple Propionic Acid-Induced Biochemical Autistic Features in a Rat Model

Abstract: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental disorders that clinically presented as impaired social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and weakened communication. The use of bee pollen as a supplement rich in amino acids amino acids, vitamins, lipids, and countless bioactive substances may lead to the relief of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, glutamate excitotoxicity, and impaired neurochemistry as etiological mechanisms autism. Thirty young male Western albino rats were randomly divided as: Gr… Show more

“…Long chain fatty acids such as linoleic (Omega-3), α-linolenic (Ω-6), oleic (Ω-9), and α-palmitic acid (saturated) are among the major fatty acids in BP [ 5 , 64 ]. Unsaturated fatty acids may reach 60% of pollen lipids, while palmitic acid is the most abundant saturated fatty acid [ 65 ]. Other fatty acids such as oleic acid and myristic acid have also been reported as the main lipidic components [ 43 ].…”

“…Postural imbalance directly causes the relationship with dopaminergic neuron fluctuation in the striatum. Moreover, impairment in GABA/glutamate hemostasis leads to excitotoxicity, which is a major factor for the progression of disorder and contributes to dysregulating the apoptotic schedule of neurons 12 . Apoptosis mainly occurs via the overactivation of the p38 MAPK pathway, which comprises GSK‐3β expression, resulting in excitotoxicity and impaired motor coordination 13 .…”

“…In the embryogenesis of rats, the formation of a neuronal circuit for the cranial nerve occurs on GD 12 or 13 after the closing of the neural tube on GD 11. 11 This time duration (GD [12][13] is crucial for the genesis of several sensory and motor nerves. Disruption in cranial nerve morphology, behavioral impairment, and changes in relevant gene expression have been observed following VPA exposure during pregnancy at particular time window.…”

“…Propionic acid (PPA) is widely used to model mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons and has been shown to disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential, biogenesis, and respiration in vitro [31][32][33][34][35]. PPA is known to impair neuronal metabolism and alter behavior in vivo and is an established animal model to study neurodevelopmental mechanisms involved in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44]. However, the effect of PPA on mitochondrial morphology and dynamics remains understudied.…”
