“…Citicoline treatment may be effective in suppressing oxidative stress and consequently controlling inflammation in UVB corneal injury. Citicoline exerts this effect by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and increasing antioxidant defense mechanisms (Tokuc et al, 2021).…”

“…Now there are citicoline in eye drops formulations for the management of glaucoma [ 818 - 821 ]. Tokuc et al [ 822 ] demonstrate the protective effects of citicoline eye drops on ultraviolet B radiation-induced corneal oxidative damage in a rat model. Parisi et al [ 823 ] reported the results of a pilot study evaluating the long-term efficacy of citicoline and vitamin B 12 eye drops on macular function in patients with type 1 diabetes with mild signs of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.…”

“…Compared with ultraviolet A which can directly reach the retina, ultraviolet radiation at a shorter wavelength, designated as ultraviolet B (UVB, wavelength between 280 and 320 nm), is found to cause severe and long-term injury to the cornea, leading to complications such as opacification, edema, or photokeratitis [ 5 , 6 ]. One of the causes of ocular damage induced by UVB is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS)/reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and the decrease of corneal antioxidants [ [7] , [8] , [9] ]. Such a prooxidant/antioxidant imbalance may result in the oxidative injury of the cornea and further causes the damage to cellular lipids, proteins, or DNAs, and eventually leads to cell apoptosis [ 5 , 10 ].…”
