Protective Effects of Epigallocatechin Gallate for Male Sexual Dysfunction in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Sexual dysfunction is a common problem for men with diabetes. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is known to ameliorate erectile function in aging rats. However, there has not yet been a report to evaluate its effects on diabetic male rat sexual behavior in the literature. In this study, we investigated the effects of EGCG on male sexual behavior in diabetic rats. Diabetic rats were induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of 65 mg/kg of streptozotocin. After streptozotocin injection for one week, animals we… Show more

“…The male rats were then acclimatized in the same cage with the estrous female rats for 10 min, and the male rats were observed for the presence or absence of copulation and for mounting latency and mounting frequency, intromission latency and intromission frequency, and ejaculation latency and ejaculation frequency. If there was no copulation, latency was recorded as 1,800 s, and frequency was recorded as 0 [10].…”

“…In recent times, herbal formulations are attaining popularity in the management and control of diabetes and its complications. 13 For instance, herbal compounds such as baicalein (flavonoid) 14 and epigallocatechin gallate (polyphenol) 15 have shown to be able to protect diabetes-induced male sexual dysfunction in rodents by attenuating antioxidant and anti-inflammatory enzymes. A lichen depsidone, Salazinic acid (Sa) has been found to be significantly expressed in the genus of Lobaria , 16 Parmelia , 17 and Usnea , 18,19 has been acknowledged for its various biological activities including antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antimycobacterial, cytotoxicity, wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and xanthine oxidase inhibitory actions.…”
