Protective effects of extracts from six local strains of Pyropia yezoensis against oxidative damage in vitro and in zebrafish model

Abstract: Pyropia yezoensis has been used as functional food in East Asia, especially in Korea and Japan, for more than five hundred years. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant effect of polyphenols and proteins-rich extracts from P. yezoensis (PPPs) against 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced oxidative cell damage. Among six Korean local strains obtained from Jinhae (JiH), Haenam (HN), Jangheung (JaH), Jindo (JD), Wando (WD), and Sinan (SA) areas, the extracts of P. yezoensis from SA an… Show more

“…The Bangiales (Rhodophyta) contains some of the commercially most important red algae that have been used for millennia and support multi-million dollars industries mainly in Asia (Kim et al 2014, Badis et al 2020, Dai et al 2020, Lee et al 2021. The order contains two morphological types in the gametophytes: a group consisting mostly of monostromatic blades, and a filamentous group.…”

“…Zebrafish are used as an animal model for in vivo whitening studies because their genetic makeup is more than 90% similar to that in mammals [ 25 ]. Among the 21 fractions exhibiting antioxidant, anti-UV, and antimelanogenesis activities, F10 showed the strongest activities and lowest cytotoxicity in vitro.…”

“…Furthermore, VPOP1 inhibits H 2 O 2 -induced ROS production and lipid peroxidation in zebrafish. Lipid peroxidation is usually triggered by excess ROS, and H 2 O 2 can induce lipid peroxidation in cells [40]. Lipid peroxidation is a chain reaction in which lipids react with free radicals, and lipid hydroperoxides and peroxy fatty acid free radicals generated during this process attack different biomolecules.…”
